Our Pigs
At Shelby Acres, we pride ourselves on providing a free-roaming lifestyle for our pigs, ensuring they are well-cared for and happy. Throughout our journey, we have raised several breeds and have settled on two particular breeds that thrive in this environment and are easy to raise.
Gloucester Old Spot
The Gloucester Old Spot, often called the “Orchard Pig,” originated in Gloucestershire, England. Known for its distinctive white coat with black spots, this heritage breed is celebrated for its docility, intelligence, and excellent maternal instincts. Historically raised on small family farms, these pigs thrived on dairy by-products and orchard drop fruit. The breed was officially recognized in 1913 with the formation of the Gloucestershire Old Spots Breed Society.
Kune Kune
The Kune Kune pig, meaning “fat and round” in Māori, comes from New Zealand. Believed to have descended from an Asian domestic breed introduced in the early 19th century, the Kune Kune was adopted by the Māori people for its friendly and docile nature. Nearly extinct by the 1980s, a successful breeding recovery program revived the breed. Today, Kune Kune pigs are cherished for their manageable size, gentle temperament, and ability to graze on grass.
